Albunex and Infoson, used mainly in cardiac evaluations, are first generation one-pass-only contrast agents and have been replaced by the new-generation contrast media. Albunex and Infoson are the same sonicated human serum albumin microbubbles. Infoson is licensed and manufactured in Europe, while Albunex was produced in the USA. Albunex, an air-filled microbubble with a denatured albumin shell (modified from air-filled albumin microspheres prepared from sonicated 5% human serum albumin), was the first FDA-approved contrast agent, but is no longer in production. Cardiac shunts and valve regurgitations are often evaluated with Color Doppler Imaging (CDI), which also improved with injections of Albunex, but this agent is pressure-sensitive and does not recirculate. Bubble destruction describes the microbubble shell rupture by ultrasound pulses. The bubble destruction increases with increasing peak negative pressure and decreasing frequency. The mechanical index is an indicator for the effectiveness of microbubble destruction. Contrast enhanced ultrasound relies on bubble rupture to detect bubbles in small vessels. Perfluorochemicals are used as microbubble filling gases because of their low solubility in blood and high vapor pressure. Various types of perfluorochemical gases like perfluorocarbon, perfluorobutane, perfluoropropane, and perfluorohexane are used to substitute the air in microbubbles to improve the stability and plasma longevity of the agents.
Perfluorocarbons are liquids at room temperature but gas at body temperature. The large molecules of perfluorocarbons have slow diffusion and solubility which increase the enhancement time of the ultrasound contrast agent as compared to air. See also Filling Gas, and PESDA. Further Reading: Basics:

Piezo means pressure, so piezoelectric means that pressure is generated when electrical energy is applied to a quartz crystal. When electrical energy is applied to the face of the crystal, the shape of the crystal changes as a function of the polarity of the applied electrical energy. As the crystal expands and contracts it produces compressions and rarefactions, and creates sound waves. When this material is struck by sound waves it creates electrical currents. Thus, a piezoelectric crystal can produce a pulse of mechanical energy (pressure pulse) by electrically exciting the crystal (transmitter), and they can produce a pulse of electrical energy by mechanically exciting the crystal (receiver). This ultrasound physics principle is called the piezoelectric effect (pressure electricity), which was discovered by Pierre and Jacques Curie in 1880, and is used to generate ultrasound waves. Instead of quartz crystals, piezoelectric ceramics such as barium titanate or lead zirconate titanate are also used, which are crystalline materials with similar piezoelectric properties. Plethysmography implies volume measurement procedures including air, impedance or strain gauge methods. Vascular plethysmography is a non-invasive measurement of the systolic blood pressure of a leg compared with that of an arm to determine circulatory capacity.
