Imagent®
Imagent® is an injectable suspension for intravenous administration during a sonogram. This diagnostic contrast agent for enhancement of ultrasound images contains perflexane lipid microspheres. Imagent® US is indicated in the assessment of heart function and perfusion, as well as the detection of tumors and blood flow abnormalities by using gray scale, color Doppler, and harmonic ultrasound imaging techniques.
During the course of its development, the brand name for this product has changed from Imagent to Imavist (between August 2000 and March 2002) back to Imagent. The manufacturer's 06/03/02 press release announcing FDA approval refers to the product as 'Imagent (formerly Imavist),' and the approval notice and monograph posted at the FDA site refers to the product as Imagent.

Left Ventricular Opacification
(LVO) Ultrasound contrast agents improve the echocardiography assessment of left ventricular function and the low sensitivity of changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). In addition, harmonic imaging techniques and automated border detection (ABD) together with contrast enhanced left ventricular opacification increase endocardial border delineation (EBD) and the results compared to native echocardiography.
Microbubbles
Microbubbles filled with air or inert gases are used as contrast agents in ultrasound imaging. Compression and rarefaction created by an ultrasound wave insonating a gas-filled microbubble along with the mechanical index of the ultrasonic beam lead to volume pulsations of the bubbles, and it is this change that results in the signal enhancement.
Microbubbles have diameters from 1 μm to 10 μm and a thin flexible or rigid shell composed of albumin, lipid, or polymer confining a gas such as nitrogen, or a perfluorocarbon. These microbubbles can cross the pulmonary capillaries and have a serum half-life of a few minutes. Microbubbles in the 1-10 μm range have their resonance at the frequencies used in diagnostic ultrasound (1−15MHz). Smaller bubbles resonate at higher frequencies. Caused by this coincidence, they are such effective reflectors.
The intrinsic compressibility of microbubbles is approximately 17,000 times more than water, and they are very strong scatterers of ultrasound. Under acoustic pressure the vibrating bubble radius may have a conventional linear response or a harmonic non-linear response. Microbubbles usually increase the Doppler signal amplitude by up to 30 dB.
Multiple Frame Trigger
The multiple frame trigger adjusts the acquisition of a series of consecutive frames, usually with ECG triggering. Multiple frame triggers are used in harmonic power Doppler modes to identify motion artifacts in contrast enhanced Doppler imaging.
