Doppler Angle
The Doppler angle (theta) is the angle of incidence between the ultrasound beam and the estimated flow direction (parallel to the long axis of the vessel). If the beam is parallel to the flowing blood, the Doppler angle is zero, and the determination of flow is most accurate.

Beam Vessel Angle
The beam vessel angle is between the axis of the ultrasound beam and the axis of a vessel lumen. This angle is equal to the Doppler angle when flow is parallel to the vessel axis.
Also called angle of attack.
Doppler Shift
Doppler Shift is the change in the perceived frequency relative to the transmitted frequency. The Doppler shift is dependent on the insonating frequency, the velocity of moving blood, and the angle between the sound beam and direction of moving blood.
Doppler equation:
Doppler shift frequency: fD = fr - f0 = 2f0v/c
Where fD is the Doppler shift frequency = the difference between transmitted and received frequencies.
Ultrasound system use the following equation:
Doppler shift frequency with incident angle: fD = 2f0v/c cosØ
Where f is the transmitted frequency, v is the blood velocity, c is the speed of sound in tissue, cosØ is the Cosine of the blood flow to beam angle.
The Doppler angle (theta) is the angle of incidence of the beam upon the object. If the beam is parallel to the flowing blood, the angle theta is zero, and the determination of flow is most accurate. If the angle of incidence is greater, the results are less reliable. Doppler shift results with an angle greater than 20° should not be used for the calculation.

Color Power Doppler
(CPD) CPD is a type of color Doppler to visualize the presence of detectable blood flow. The flow information is based on the amplitude or strength of echoes received from moving cells and not on frequency shifts. Power Doppler is very sensitive to flowing blood but does not provide velocity or directional information.
CPD is less angle dependent than traditional color Doppler, but more sensitive to motion artifacts. Color power angio (CPA) provides better sensitivity to slow flow states.
The color maps for CPD are represented by a single continuous color (colour, Brit.). Because CPD does not provide directional information, no aliasing artifact occurs.

Linear Probe
A linear probe contains one or more acoustic linear array transducer elements arranged in a line to send pulses of sound into a material. The linear array gives a large probe surface (footprint) and near field. In Doppler mode, a linear probe operates a subset of its elements as a linear phased array and can thus steer the Doppler beam at a selected angle to the imaging beam. This is a popular configuration for peripheral vascular and perivascular scanning.
