The zero crossing detector displays Doppler frequency shifts. The circuit detects the zero crossing frequency and generates an output which is proportional to the average frequency at the point where the crossing occurred. See also Motion Discrimination Detector. •
The motion discrimination detector is used for signal processing in color Doppler systems to distinguish between Doppler shifts from moving blood and moving tissue. See also Zero Crossing Detector. •
Doppler Shift is the change in the perceived frequency relative to the transmitted frequency. The Doppler shift is dependent on the insonating frequency, the velocity of moving blood, and the angle between the sound beam and direction of moving blood. Doppler equation: Doppler shift frequency: fD = fr - f0 = 2f0v/c Where fD is the Doppler shift frequency = the difference between transmitted and received frequencies. Ultrasound system use the following equation: Doppler shift frequency with incident angle: fD = 2f0v/c cosØ Where f is the transmitted frequency, v is the blood velocity, c is the speed of sound in tissue, cosØ is the Cosine of the blood flow to beam angle. The Doppler angle (theta) is the angle of incidence of the beam upon the object. If the beam is parallel to the flowing blood, the angle theta is zero, and the determination of flow is most accurate. If the angle of incidence is greater, the results are less reliable. Doppler shift results with an angle greater than 20° should not be used for the calculation. Harmonic B-mode imaging takes advantage of the non-linear oscillation
of microbubbles. During harmonic imaging, the sound signal is transmitted at a frequency of around 1.5 to 2.0 MHz and received at twice this frequency. The microbubbles also reflect waves with wavelengths different from the transmitted one, the detectors can be set to receive only the latter ones and create only images of the contrast agent. Using bandpass filters the transmitted frequency is separated from the received signal to get improved visualization of vessels containing ultrasound contrast agents (USCAs). The signal to noise ratio during the presence of microbubbles in tissue is four- to fivefold higher at the harmonic compared with the basic frequency. Using harmonic B-mode imaging, harmonic frequencies produced by the ultrasound propagation through tissue have to be taken into account. The tissue reflection produces only a small amount harmonic energy compared to USCAs, but has to be removed by background subtraction for quantitative evaluation of myocardial perfusion. Quadrature detection is used in Doppler ultrasound as well as in magnetic resonance imaging and is also called quadrature demodulation or phase quadrature technique. Quadrature detection is the acquisition of Mx and My simultaneously as a function of time by using two separate detector channels. This signal processing method is used for directional Doppler in which the signal reference frequency for the two channels has a phase shift of 1/4 period. The output Doppler signal phase for both channels also depends on the Doppler shift whether positive or negative. The fast Fourier transform analyzer performs spectral Doppler analysis in ultrasound machines and displays different quadrature Doppler frequencies, when a sample volume cursor is used along time.
